As time goes by, your PS4 disk space is taken up by increasing captures, saved data, settings, and installed applications. The default hard drive in PS4 is running out of space and you want to upgrade your PS4 hard drive to an external hard drive. Use the backup on external hard drive in other systems like Windows and Mac without the need of reformatting it and the risk of losing all stored data. Move on to the next part. PS4 only supports these two file systems. If you want to back up a full drive, the external drive should have at least double the storage space the PS4 hard drive has.
Apply moderate, even pressure near the seam with your palms, and using your fingers as leverage, slide the top panel away from you. A click will be heard, and the panel will move about 7mm. Lift the panel off starting from the left side. With the top panel removed, you'll see a screw with the PlayStation symbols on it. Remove this by turning the screw anti-clockwise to remove the HDD. Pull the HDD toward the front of the system to remove it. Remove the four screws holding the HDD in the caddy.
Insert the replacement HDD into the caddy and replace the four screws. Insert the caddy into the PlayStation 4 bay and replace the screw. Replace the top panel. Place it over the exposed section of the PlayStation 4, about 7mm away from the seam.
Now slide the panel towards the seam until it clicks into place. Reconnect the HDMI, power, and any other cables that were disconnected in the first step. With the games now stored on the external hard drive, you can take it and plug it into a different PS4, where the games should appear on the home menu screen. As long as you're logged in on the PSN account which owns the games and are signed in online, you can then launch them and start playing immediately.
One thing to note - game saved data cannot be stored on an external hard drive being used for extended storage, so if you want to continue your progress then you'll need to transfer your saved data between consoles using either PlayStation Plus online storage or a separate USB device.
